American Bottom: Virgil's Corn

 

 

 

On August 1, 1993 the Mississippi broke through the levee near Columbia, Illinois and roared south through the American Bottom, carrying Virgil Gummersheimer's corn crop with it and spreading a layer of sand across his corn field.
