Sawyer and McCraken built a five story steam in 1867 in Nashville, the seat of Washington County, Illinois. They outfitted it with six run of stones capable of producing five hundred barrels of flour a day. Until the turn of the twentieth century, when they built the metal-clad elevator, they stored their grain on the top stories of the mill.
