Silver Mines: October 9

Silver Mines is a challenging photographic problem. The vertical rocks on the south bank face north and are in shadow. To shoot from the north side of the river is to shoot into the sun for most of the day. To shoot from the east, the north side of the river is well lighted, but not very interesting. At the end of the day, however, the sun sets over the ridge on the south side of the river, casting most of the scene in shadow, but it acts as a spotlight on the yellow trees on the north bank. To bring out the detail in the shadow, I measured the light in the shadow. To bring out the detail in the spotlight, the printer pours more light on the background than on the foreground.
