North Prairie, a study in light and color, ,follows a wheat crop from sprout to harvest. Each pair of images were made within five minutes of each other on opposite sides of the red shed. As the quality of the light changed the color red changed.

 

April 8

First thing in the morning on a clear day, it is a clear red on the east side, and black on the west.

April 30

On a wet dewy morning three weeks later, the red is orange on the east side, and muddy red on the west where the moisture in the air defuses the light.

May 11

At mid-day on a foggy day, it is a dark red on the east side and a subdued red on the west.

June 19

At mid-day as the wheat has ripened, it is a clear red on the east side a very dark red, almost black, on the west side.

June 23

After a summer storm at mid-day, the west side is only a little darker red than the east side.
