American Bottom: Mueller's Cypress

In 1963 Herbert Mueller planted a grove of cypess trees in a field that would not dry out. In August 1993 the levee protecting the American Bottom broke and the Mississippi inundated Mueller's farm. When the flood waters drained away, it became evident that Mueller's cypress grove was an old slough of the Mississippi River.
