Before the uplift of the Salem Plateau Missouri's Ozark Rivers meandered across a peneplain, think gently rolling plain. As the plateau rose, the rivers maintained their meanders as they eroded the underlying rock formations. The Meramec River rises deep in Missouri's Ozarks and flows through two state parks before emptying into the Mississippi a few miles south of St. Louis.

At Meramec State Park and at Campbell Bridge, the river downcut through the Eminence Formation.

At Castlewood State Park the Meramec meandered through a wall of loess, wind-blown dirt deposited by glaciers.
