American Bottom: Fountain Creek
On August 1, 1993 the Mississippi River burst through a levee near Columbia, Illlinois, surged south through the American Bottom, and overtopped and breached the levee at Fountain Creek. Six days later only the levees on either side of Fountain Creek, not far from the breach, defined the bank of the creek.
